'tis the season for hot cocoa baby!
by DT Kristen

A Quick Card from DT Kristen Completed in the Length of Time it Takes to Drink a Cuppa Coffee, Cocoa, or Tea

And the best part is that no one would guess that it’s a quick and easy card.  The number of die cut embellishments, heat embossing, and little touches like the white flocking powder on the stockings make it look a lot more complex than it is.  I thought that if anyone was still making their Christmas cards for this year, they would appreciate an easy, quick card.  And, well, to be honest, my toddler got ahold of the first card I made…..

I started off with my square cut Mambi Card; love these as they have crease lines and are a very heavy cardstock and can hold a lot of weight.  I grabbed a sheet of shimmer white cardstock, a scrap of 80lb white cardstock, and one sheet each of red and silver Holtz Silver Deco Adhesive Sheets.  I stamped my little raccoon, his hat, and the two coffee cups from Lawn Fawn’s HolidayParty Animal in Onyx Black Versafine ink and embossed with clear EP.   This is such a versatile set and a great deal at only $6 from Firefly Crafts!  I also stamped my sentiment “’Tis the season…hot cocoa baby” with Satin Red Versafine ink and heat embossed with clear EP using sentiments from Honey Bee Stamps Flakey Sentiments and More Flakey Friends.  I put the flag die (brand unknown) on top of the shimmer paper so I knew how much room I had to stamp and what angle to tilt the words on.  I colored all but the raccoon’s eyes with Copic markers; for those I used my black Wink of Stella glimmer marker.

Then it was over to my Sizzix Vagabond die cutting machine for my favorite part of making any card- the cutting!  I first cut my sentiment out using a flag die.  Using the leftover shimmer paper, I cut a “leaf pile” hill from the Lawn Fawn Jump for Joy set.  I prefer this little stitched hill over the regular Lawn Fawn landscape dies for square cards like this one; the full length hills seem to overwhelm square cards.  I then used a sheet of Adhesive Deco Sheet in silver to cut my adorable little snowman which can be bought from Firefly Crafts!  I love these sheets of glitter for so many reasons; the two biggest being that I don’t have to worry about how to attach them (which is a relief with intricate dies and ones with lots of openings like this little guy) and because it’s the only glitter allowed in my house; all loose glitter is banned =)  I then cut the set of three stockings from a piece of red Adhesive Deco Sheet.  I cut a few squares of double sided tape with the die to use as the top of the stockings.  I cut out my stamped images and then on a whim decided to cut out the square Simon Says Stamp Highlight Frame from the red glitter scraps leftover from my stockings.  I decided that I wanted the top of my stockings to be fuzzy so instead of adhering a piece of white paper, I used White Doodlebug Flocking Powder.  I was surprised at the little bit of transparency it had but overall love how it turned out; and I like to “pet” the soft and fuzzy top of the stockings.

I was all over the place while assembling my card; I used Crafty Power Tape to attach the snowy hill to the card base and the hat and coffee mug to my raccoon.  The Snowman I didn’t need to worry about; all I did was peel his backing off and stick him on the hill; same with the highlight die cut. I then used dimensional squares to adhere my sentiment banner to the top of the card, the raccoon to the hill, and the mug to the snowman’s hand.  I absolutely LOVE the 3D effect of the mug in the snowman’s hand!!  I used a black Sharpie permanent marker to write the word “for” on the sentiment banner and put a row of white beads on the top and red on the bottom.  Last, instead of using the adhesive on the back of the stockings to adhere them to the page, I decided to use the snowflake brads through the loop in the ribbon that holds them up.  It slightly cut off the beginning of my sentiment- but I liked it so much I let it that way.  Hope you enjoyed my card…. Have a VERY Merry Christmas!
